The life and art of Albrecht Durer Albrecht Durer was born in Nuremberg, the free city of Germany, in 1471 to a Hungarian goldsmith and his wife who had come to Nuremberg 16 years earlier. Nuremberg at the time of Durer's birth was so called the free city of Germany because of its liberalness toward its citizens. Although socially Nuremberg and its citizens were similar to the citizens of Renaissance Italy artistically they lacked the mindset to transcend their medieval past and their art remained rooted in the gothic style of that same past. Albrecht was no different then his fellow Germans he was just willing to consciously force himself for the sake of knowledge to assimilate into his own work the art which was slowly filtering north across the Alps. This assimilation and his ability to stay true to himself as an artist would eventually lead through his lifetime to not only a place in German history for which only Bach and Goethe can be compared but also international fame and the respect of publishers, artists, and humanists from Amsterdam to Venice.
